How do I signup for hosting?
To sign up for Hosting or e-mail services, please
go to the relevant page and click Order
Now! at the foot of
the page.
What features does my Account support?
For a comprehensive view of features supported by your account,
visit the hosting or e-mail page, alternatively, log
in to your Control Panel to see what is available to
you.
How do I set up my Account?
Configuring your account is a breeze using the HELM Control
Panel. Once you log in, click on Domains, select your domain
name and you will see the features you can configure/use.
HELM includes an online help system to guide you through
the choices.
What is DiskSpace and how much have I got?
Disk space is the amount of space on the server that
your website files use. If they use 35Mb on your PC, they will
use 35Mb on the server too. This figure will stay the same
if you are only serving standard HTML pages, if you are using
a database then this figure will vary depending on what your
database is used for.
What is Bandwidth?
Each file downloaded from your domain using up Bandwidth.
This is equal to the size of the file. If the same file, eg
a 5Kb file is downloaded 10 times, then that file has used
up 50Kb of bandwidth. All files that make up your page, eg
images, also contribute to your bandwidth, so it is important
to ensure that your images are optimised and that your files
are also bandwidth friendly.
What happens if I go over my allocation on DiskSpace or
Bandwidth?
We won't cut you off and we won't charge you straight away. What we do is monitor the usage of your account and if after two months you are still over your limits, we will advise you by e-mail and offer you the chance to upgrade your account.
How much is extra Disk Space/Bandwidth?
Current rates will be shown on your Control Panel
and are the same regardless of account you have purchased.
I have a web hosting account with another provider that
I wish to transfer to m8y, can you do this for me or can
it be automated?
Unfortunately not. You will have to upload your site
by FTP.
What is FTP?
FTP is File Transfer Protocol, basically the means
by which your computer talks to the server when sending your
websites files to your webspace.
What programs do you recommend for FTP?
Some web authoring software have built in FTP
clients, however, you can use any FTP software with your
account. You need to ensure that you have entered the correct
details for your account.
What settings do I use for FTP?
Hostname: ftp.yourdomain.com
User ID: yourdomain.com
Password: yourpassword (You can edit this in your Control Panel)
If you use a firewall, you will have to configure it to allow
your FTP program to access the internet - refer to your firewall's
help files to do this.
What do you not allow on your servers?
Please read our Terms of Service, but basically nothing
that is illegal, incites hatred, or racism, pornography, or
links to any site which promotes anything contrary to our ToS.
Can I use my webspace to run a Business?
Yes you can. You can use your site for whatever
purpose you have in mind provided it doesn't breech our
Terms of Service.
What Scripting languages can I use?
You can use any which are support by your account. These
include ASP(VBScript), ASP.NET, PHP and all accounts have
FrontPage Extensions available.
I don't know how to use ASP, ASP.NET, or PHP. Can you help
me?
That depends on what you want. Check out sites such
as www.w3schools.com that have loads of information and tutorials
on server scripting. We will try to help if you have problems
with existing scripts.
I want to add a forum/messageboard to my site, what do you
recommend?
Your account offers you complete flexibility of
three powerful scripting languages. We recommend the following
FREE forums:
Snitz - Uses ASP and Access or mySql
databases. We recommend using mySql for it's speed advantage
and ability to handle more users at the same time than Access.
phpBB2 - A powerful PHP/mySql bulletin board with loads
of features.
Please note that it is YOUR responsibility
to ensure your forum runs smoothly and keeps your account
within the Terms
of Service. Should we find objectionable material on your
forum, we will expect you to have it removed within 7 days
of the message containing it being posted.
I want to add a forum to my site, can you install it for
me?
Yes, we will install it for you, but it is up to you to configure
and administer it. We do not provide support for the forums
we install.
I want to add a shopping cart, but don't know where to look.
A popular free online shopping system, osCommerce, is available.
We can install it for you or you can download it from osCommerce.com and
install it yourself.
I have an application that requires a mySql database, how
do I set one up?
You can create the database from your Control Panel.
Once you have added 1 user in HELM, you can follow the link
provided in HELM to phpMyAdmin to setup your database.
What is phpMyAdmin?
phpMyAdmin is an online database administration
tool which is available once you have created your mySql
database
through your Control Panel.
How do I use phpMyAdmin?
Please visit phpMyAdmin's
Documentation page for more information.
What is HELM?
HELM is an easy to use web based control panel which
you can use to configure your account, check your balance,
statistics, order extra features, set up e-mail accounts
and much more. You can access your Control Panel by replacing
the www. with helm.
